Having helped FX concept and edit original on-air teasers for virtually every season of American Horror Story since 2011, the question early on was how to evolve our approach as social media eclipsed broadcast as the way to reach viewers. The answer? Don’t change a thing.
From the beginning, the creative approach we developed with FX followed the rules of social before they were rules: short, gut-punch, visual-first teases that pose questions and drive conversation. What worked on-air as disruptive spots in viewers’ living rooms became perfect snackable content when released on social.
Each season, we steep ourselves in the details of the new premise, drawing out themes with a visual language that communicates a new setting and threat while staying in the shocking and darkly entertaining tone of the anthology. In a few shoot days, we collaborate with Team FX, who shoot dozens of concepts and images that not only make up the teasers, but become the basis of a unified campaign across all platforms.
