Crossing Swords

The Challenge

Hulu asked us to launch a new animated show with the innocent look of a vintage kids’ series and the depraved mind of a drunken sailor. There’s no doubt who the  target demographic was, but how best to expand the audience beyond its core? The answer? Double-down on the raunch and f*** everyone else.

Our Approach

We avoided the typical marketing spin that appeals to a broader audience and fully embraced the hilariously offensive elements of the series, pairing the show’s poppy colors and toy-like characters with the gleefully vulgar comedy every chance we had. From Tap To Uncensor Instagram stories and NSFW social AV & GIFs, to playfully crude in-world ads and recreations of the Kama Sutra with full-frontal toy nudity, we bolded, underlined, and italicized the “adult” in adult animation. And it worked. Fans celebrated the show for its uproarious depravity, critics called it “The horniest stop-motion medieval fantasy series ever made,” and Hulu ordered up a 2nd season.
